Third Debt (Indebted #4)
Author: Pepper Winters
Release Date: 16 April 2015
“She healed me. She broke me. I set her free. But we are in this together. We will end this together. The rules of this ancient game can’t be broken.”
Nila Weaver no longer recognises herself. She’s left her lover, her courage, and her promise. Two debts down. Too many to go.
Jethro Hawk no longer recognises himself. He’s embraced what he always ran from, and now faces punishment far greater than he feared.
It’s almost time. It’s demanding to be paid.
The Third Debt will be the ultimate test...
*There may be some spoilers for previous books*
This is another fascinating installment in the Indebted series, following Nila's rescue by her family. Despite being technically free she feels more like a prisoner and yearns to be reunited with Jethro. Jethro is left to deal with the consequences at Hawksbridge Hall, where his father doles out the punishment he thinks is necessary.
Whilst I'm enjoying the story and I love its unpredictability as the plot twists and turns leaving us speechless, I'm also getting slightly (dare I say) bored by some elements of it. I find the back and forth, particularly regarding Jethro's emotions, slightly repetitive. I know there's a whole boatload of emotional turmoil in each book, but I think Nila's character has grown with it steadily throughout the series but Jethro hasn't really done the same.
This next point is kind of my own personal preference. I'm not a big fan of delayed gratification, especially when it comes to books. In fact, usually I wouldn't have started a series like this where I knew there would be several books with one story woven throughout them, but I love Pepper's writing so I knew I had to read them. I'm just feeling a bit weary of it all and there are still questions needing answering, but the plot feels a little dragged out. I don't really understand how there are still another two books in the series. Although, I guess we're bound to have lots of shocks and surprises to throw us for a loop and easily fill those two books. I won't ever pretend I know what will happen next in this series!
Despite the few niggles that stopped me from loving this book, I did thoroughly enjoy it- in a sort of macabre, overly emotional way. I always cry way too much when I read a book in this series. The story starts off slowly, picking up the the loose threads left by the last book and weaving them into a complex and often tragic tale. Pepper Winters has a talent for immersing you so deeply in the story that you feel every emotion. I love that in this book we finally find out just what Jethro's dark, shameful secret is. I actually guessed it a while back but wasn't sure up until the reveal that I was right. The ending is fairly staggering but I refuse to believe it is what it seems. Although I accidentally saw a spoiler that prepared me for that ending- grr. I'm very, very intrigued to see where Fourth Debt will take us and just what Nila's fate will be.
