A Marquess’ daughter, Lady Sophia Barnes doesn’t take no for an answer. Especially when she’s roaming London’s seedy underground…dressed as a man.

A rabble rouser for justice, Sophie’s latest mission is to fight for the rights of the poor, the wretched—and the employees at Madame Hartley’s brothel. She’s not concerned about the criminals who will cross her path, for Sophie has mastered the art of deception—including the art of wearing trousers. Now her fate is in her own hands, along with a loaded gun. All she needs is instruction on how to shoot it. But only one person can help her: Lord Quint, the man who broke her heart years ago. The man she won’t let destroy her again…

The last thing Damien Beecham, Viscount Quint, needs is an intrusion on his privacy, especially from the beautiful, exasperating woman he’s never stopped wanting. A woman with a perilously absurd request, no less! For Damien is fighting a battle of his own, one he wishes to keep hidden—along with his feelings for Lady Sophia. Yet that fight is as hopeless as stopping her outlandish plan. Soon all Quint knows for certain is that he will die trying to protect her…

And so we come to the third and final (I think) book in the Wicked Deceptions. It's been a blast reading these stories and I've come to really enjoy this author's writing through this series.

Our heroine in this book is Lady Sophia Barnes. Sophie's a very unconventional woman for this time period. She's a spinster and has no intentions of marrying, instead she devotes her time to conducting investigations for the women in London who can find help nowhere else- usually the poor or the prostitutes. Sophie dresses as a man and starts investigating the disappearance of a prostitute but the closer she gets to answers, the more questions she starts to unearth and soon she's on the trail of a serial killer. So, like I said- very unconventional. I loved that Sophie's so determined, brave and intelligent. Though some of the situations she gets herself into could definitely have done with some forethought before she threw herself headfirst into it. Her recklessness with her own safety frustrated me at times to be honest, even when I admired her boldness and perseverance.

Quint is a man with many, many issues. After being shot he begins to have fits and becomes terrified that he's going mad, just like his father. He becomes a recluse, refusing to leave his house or receive visitors. In fact, his only visitor is Sophie who (thankfully) barges her way in regardless of Quint's wishes. Quint begins to slowly recover, thanks entirely to Sophie. Quint is very intelligent with a scientific mindset that relies on reason and knowledge, another way his illness confounds him since it seems to have no reason to it. I loved how sweet Quint was with Sophia, even when he's angry and frustrated with her behaviour, he's still supportive and proud of her.

I thought Quint and Sophie were pretty perfect as a couple. His more cautious and logical nature  balances her rashness and they have an explosive chemistry that they've both tried to ignore for years. I loved the way Sophie is absolutely determined to help Quint see that he can get better and she's there for him, even when he doesn't want her to be. I also loved Quint's protectiveness with Sophia.

This may not have been my favourite in the series, but Joanna Shupe continues to impress me. Her plots are detailed and well constructed, without being overly complicated. I was thoroughly engaged throughout the book by both the intrigue of the plot and the brewing romance between Quint and Sophie. If you're looking for a heroine who can really hold her own, and a hero who's definitely not your typical rakish lord, then this is definitely the book for you.

*I received a review copy for my honest opinion. Thank you!
