Shattering Halos
Author: Sunniva Dee

Release Date: 24 February 2014

I traded my death for love. I wasn’t given a choice. His decision has caught up with us, so now I am a living, breathing catalyst to war between Heaven and Hell.

The violations he committed saved my life. Since the collision, he’s appeared everywhere. In my hospital room, my school, even my house. He shows up in my paintings, my drawings, in all of my art projects. I can’t stop thinking about him.

He says his name is Gabriel, and he doesn’t understand what’s happening to him. He doesn’t know how I can see him or why he wants me in ways that should be impossible for a Celestial.

My obsession grows. I need him to hold me, kiss me—give all of himself. For every day he protects me, the consequences loom darker and taller. Soon, they’ll crash down on us.

The war is about to begin.

At my house, he opened the car door for me. He sent me a dark look as I fought to get out of the seat. I couldn’t conceal how my body trembled when he crossed his arms instead of helping me out.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
Gabriel shook his head wearily and closed his eyes.
Don’t close them. I shouldn’t have…“No, sunshine. I’m sorry.”
I wanted to stroke a cheekbone, skim a full lip, but knew he wouldn’t let me. At the door, I turned to look back at him. He hadn’t moved. Gabriel stood infinitely still with his hands balled tight by his sides, a golden deity meeting my gaze…defiantly.

What caught me immediately about Shattering Halos, was the plot. I mean, come on- if a drop dead gorgeous angel suddenly appeared in my life, I'd be pretty darn happy about it. Especially if that angel looked like Gabriel!

Gabriel and Gaia were enjoyable characters and they had a great, intense chemistry. It becomes very obvious, very quickly that Gabriel and Gaia were not going to be able to let their attraction go. Forbidden or not, this is going to happen! Obviously Gabriel is pure and angelic....he's an angel, but I really enjoyed watching some more human traits emerge as their relationship developed. Gaia wasn't quite as flawless as Gabriel's character. Honestly, the level of her obsession with Gabriel startled me at first before it mellows into a deep and meaningful love. I definitely preferred the Gaia we come to know as the story progresses.
I really liked Cassiel's character, and I thought it was an interesting choice to have one of the POVs from his perspective. It definitely adds to his character though, and I'd be very intrigued to see if he'll have his own story.

The plot was very enjoyable. It's fast paced and filled with a forbidden romance and trouble in the Heavens. The first few chapters were a bit too fast paced, with large chunks of time skimmed through, but it was necessary to know some of the background to Gaia and Gabriel's meeting and the events that took place that led to their romance.

I'd also like to point out that there are some really awesome names in this book. I have a bit of a thing about unusual names, and I've got plenty more added to my mental list of good names now.

I enjoyed Sunniva's writing style a lot, made more impressive considering this is her debut book! It's descriptive and flows easily. The story effortlessly includes a romance that was never meant to be, dire consequences and lots of angels! It definitely held my interest and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

About the Author

I write New Adult fiction, mostly with a paranormal twist, and don’t shy away from romance and heart-wrenching passion when necessary.
I moved from Norway to the United States in 2001, and the first awesome five years I spent in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles. Then I read “The Book”, aka, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which prompted me to drag my family and our menagerie of animals cross country to beautiful Savannah, Georgia.
I'm currently on my seventh year in the Deep South, where I enjoy the heat and the humidity. Besides writing, I spend time with the “petting zoo,” as in an opinionated parrot, cats that are experts on keyboard shortcuts, and puppies that … uh, bark.
I hold a Master's degree in languages, with concentrations within literature and linguistics. For ten years, I taught at university level, before settling in as a graduate adviser at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Writing is my passion, my joy—my addiction. SHATTERING HALOS is my debut novel, released by The Wild Rose Press, and when I'm not writing, I read. Tons.
