Blog Tour: Quintessentially Q by Pepper Winters; Review + Giveaway

So, if you've visited the blog before, you'll probably know that I adore this series! Tears of Tess totally blew me away, and now we have the sequel, Quintessentially Q. And what a sequel it was!

Quintessentially Q (Monsters in the Dark #2)
Author: Pepper Winters
Release Date: 15 December 2013

“All my life, I battled with the knowledge I was twisted… fucked up to want something so deliciously dark—wrong on so many levels. But then slave fifty-eight entered my world. Hissing, fighting, with a core of iron, she showed me an existence where two wrongs make a right."

Tess is Q’s completely. Q is Tess’s irrevocably. But now, they must learn the boundaries of their unconventional relationship, while Tess seeks vengeance on the men who sold her. Q made a blood-oath to deliver their corpses at Tess’s feet, and that’s just what he’ll do.

He may be a monster, but he’s Tess’s monster.

Oh, Pepper. How could you do that to me?! My heart hurt so much during this book. Sometimes it was from the torment suffered by Q and Tess, and sometimes it hurt because I was so goddamned happy. On numerous occasions I would dramatically fling my kindle to the side, unable to continue with all the emotion and pain- only to pick it up a minute later because I couldn't stand to not continue.

I loved, loved, loved how much we get to see Q in this book. We have plenty of scenes in his POV and I loved being able to see how much he loves Tess, but also how conflicted she can make him. He's been fighting his darkness for so long, yet she urges him to release it. Tess blurs the line between the man and 'beast' within Q, and that terrifies him, because he doesn't know how far he'll go. Q is just such a delicious ball of conflict, he wants to protect Tess so badly but isn't sure he can protect her from himself. We see another side of Q in this book as well; a tender, loving side that frankly, I wasn't sure existed. But it's there, and it's amazing. Don't get me wrong- I love Q and all his sadistic control and ruthlessness, but there's so much more to him than just that. I was in awe at how far Q would go for Tess, he would give up everything for her, no matter the consequences.
Tess is such a strong and determined woman. I can't imagine anyone more perfect for Q than Tess. She has a fighting spirit that will be tested like never before. She has to fight for Q's trust and his love. She needs him to be able to trust that she can handle the monster within Q. Tess goes through hell in this book, all over again. Except, maybe, this time it's worse. There's so much more I want to say on that, but I won't ruin it!

This book totally threw me for a loop. The first 25% or so was very much focused on Tess and Q, as they negotiate their new relationship, and test their boundaries. Then BAM, a plot twist hits you like a ton of books. I almost couldn't handle it, this was the point of my first major freak out during the book- there were many more. My heart felt like it was bleeding at this point and I was sobbing uncontrollably, something that happened with alarming frequency. Like I said, I'm staying quiet on the details, but it was incredibly intense and gut-wrenching.
We see just how strong Q and Tess really are, and their relationship is tested to its breaking point. There were scenes near the end of the book that devastated me and I was on the edge of my seat as I watched in awe and fascinated horror at the scene unfolding. The way it played out took me completely by surprise.

"I'm either going to ruin you or heal you. It's one or the other, Tess. Starting now. This will either fix us, or leave us in fucking pieces."

Honestly, I think Pepper Winters may have written a sequel better than its predecessor. It's so much darker and wickedly twisted, but utterly compelling. Quintessentially Q has invaded my mind and left me with a huge book hangover. I will endure the wait for book 3 as patiently as I possibly can, because I know that the continuation of Q and Tess' story will be worth the wait. Pepper Winters has cemented her place in my list of go-to authors, and has proven herself to be a wonderful writer, capable of turning the darkest nightmare into a beautiful and irresistible love story.

* I received a review copy from the author, for my honest opinion. Thank you!
