The Thrill of It
Author: Lauren Blakely
Release Date: 21 November 2013
A new adult story of Love. Sex. Addiction. Blackmail. And Power...
Some say love can be an addiction. Others say it's the thing that makes life worth living. Let me tell you everything I know about love...Love isn't patient, love isn't kind. Love is a game, a chase. A thrill. Love is wild and war-like, and every man and woman must fight for themselves. At least that's how it was for me. A high-priced virgin call girl by the time I started college, I was addicted to love and to sex. Even though I've never had either. I controlled love, played it, and held the world in the palm of my hands. Then I fell down from those highs, and I'm being blackmailed for all my mistakes, forced to keep secrets from everyone, except the only guy I don't regret.
With all the other women, I knew what they were. They were temporary. They were pills, they were bottles, they took away all the pain, and numbed the awful memories that wore down my ragged, wasted heart. Until I met Harley. She's the only girl I ever missed when she walked away. But now she's back in my life, every day, and there are no guarantees for us, especially since I don't know how to tell her my secrets. What happened to my family. All I know is she's the closest I've ever come to something real, and I want to feel every second of it.
How can you love with no regrets when regret is all you know?
Another thoroughly enjoyable read from Lauren Blakely! It's definitely a bit different to what I've read from Lauren before, but in a good way. It's grittier and edgier than her other books, but I'm loving this side of Lauren's writing!
Harley is a mixed bag, for a start she's a virgin call girl. She can act pretty tough, but she's so vulnerable and damaged. I really liked her, especially as she grows with the story. She actually is fairly tough, she realises that she has a problem and eventually she realises just how awful her mother is. Seriously, it's a miracle Harley turned out well with a mother like that.
Trey is also flawed, he used women (specifically, cougars) as a way to numb his pain but what he feels for Harley is very different. He sounds very, very hot and he's a tattoo artist *swoon*
They have a very intense connection, partly stemming from their shared addiction and they just seem to understand each other so much. They're incredibly close and I loved seeing their final walls come down to let the other in.
It took me a little while to really get into the story, but the second half had me hooked. The gradual revealing of their secrets and pasts ensured that I certainly couldn't put it down. I had to know exactly what happened to them, and what drove them down the paths they took.
The ending of this book shocked me, it was like a mini cliffhanger. Just enough of one to make me want the next book. Right now.
*I received a review copy from the author, for my honest review. Thank you!
