Publisher: Norilana Books

Many are called… She alone can save the world and become Death's bride.

COBWEB BRIDE (Cobweb Bride Trilogy, Book One) is a history-flavored fantasy novel with romantic elements of the Persephone myth, about Death's ultimatum to the world.

What if you killed someone and then fell in love with them?

In an alternate Renaissance world, somewhere in an imaginary "pocket" of Europe called the Kingdom of Lethe, Death comes, in the form of a grim Spaniard, to claim his Bride. Until she is found, in a single time-stopping moment all dying stops. There is no relief for the mortally wounded and the terminally ill....

Covered in white cobwebs of a thousand snow spiders she lies in the darkness... Her skin is cold as snow... Her eyes frozen... Her gaze, fiercely alive...

While kings and emperors send expeditions to search for a suitable Bride for Death, armies of the undead wage an endless war... A black knight roams the forest at the command of his undead father… Spies and political treacheries abound at the imperial Silver Court.... Murdered lovers find themselves locked in the realm of the living...

Look closer — through the cobweb filaments of her hair and along each strand shine stars...

And one small village girl, Percy—an unwanted, ungainly middle daughter—is faced with the responsibility of granting her dying grandmother the desperate release she needs.

As a result, Percy joins the crowds of other young women of the land in a desperate quest to Death's own mysterious holding in the deepest forests of the North…

And everyone is trying to stop her.

My Review

In the Kingdom of Lethe, death has stopped. People are murdered or killed in battle...and yet, they don't die. Death has stopped taking people until his cobweb bride is delivered to him. This leaves thousands of people suspended between life and death.
Women from all corners of the Kingdom are sent to death's keep to present themselves as his cobweb bride. But there are other forces at play; an undead Lord who is determined to thwart death and spies in the imperial Silver Court.

Persephone, Percy, is the overlooked and plain middle daughter of peasants, her mother thinks she's slow and a bit useless, but she is a lot more perceptive than anyone realises. Everything changes for Percy when she offers to present herself to death as his cobweb bride, in the place of her beautiful older sister. Percy was easily my favourite character, and probably the one we come to know the best. I loved her laidback attitude, she can be very flippant and is always very calm. She really grows into herself, and gains more confidence as she journeys to death's keep.

The idea of death stopping is as fascinating as it is horrifying. Imagine being stuck in your dying moment, drowning at the bottom of an icy lake until death finally takes you *shudder*. Saying that, Cobweb Bride  has an enchanted fairy tale feel to it, with a darker edge. The writing is lyrically descriptive, with a slow build up. Initially, I felt overwhelmed by the number of characters and the different lands that we're introduced to, though it becomes easier to remember characters as their stories intertwine.

Cobweb Bride serves very well as the first in a trilogy, but it felt a bit too unfinished. I wanted more development in the characters' relationships, and definitely wanted more romance. There's a lot of promise between the characters and I'm looking forward to seeing it all play out, I so want Percy to have some romance in her life!
Overall, whilst I was personally disappointed by the lack of actual romance present, the promise of it was enough to have me turning the pages eagerly. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and it flowed very smoothly. If you enjoy fantasy books, then this is perfect for you! I'm looking forward to seeing how the story will progress and the role Percy, and the other characters, will play in the search for death's cobweb bride.
