The Greek gods never actually existed. Did they? Sophie Darrow finds she was wrong about that assumption when she's pulled into the spirit realm, complete with an Underworld, on her first day at college. Adrian, the mysterious young man who brought her there, simply wants her to taste a pomegranate.

Soon, though she returns to her regular life, her mind begins exploding with dreams and memories of ancient times; of a love between two Greeks named Persephone and Hades. But lethal danger has always surrounded the immortals, and now that she's tainted with the Underworld's magic, that danger is drawing closer to Sophie.

My review

I love books based on mythology, and my favourite is Persephone and Hades' story...I definitely have a rose-tinted, romantic view on it! Persephone's Orchard did not disappoint and was a fantastic and imaginative retelling.

Sophie Darrow is moving away from home and starting college, she's worried about classes, making friends and being away from home and her boyfriend...not about getting abducted to some sort of parallel dimension. But that's exactly what happens on her first day at college.
Soon she's plunging into a world filled with danger, magic, romance, and mythology. As she learns more about who she really is, her world becomes more dangerous and more confusing.

Sophie is understandably very cautious at first with Adrian, and is sure that she's been drugged and is hallucinating. Before long her curiosity outweighs her fear. Sophie's such a likable character, she's honest and  smart.
Adrian is a total sweetie, he hates that he scared Sophie in order to bring her to this other realm, and he's just desperate for her to remember all they've shared. He's so patient with her, and very protective and kind. A perfect guy really.
Their relationship developed very sweetly, and at a realistic pace. It also mixes really well with the development of Sophie's dreams, and they weren't just together because of their previous lives.

I loved reading the flashbacks of Hades' and Persephone's lives, it blended seamlessly with the contemporary romance taking place between Adrian and Sophie. The take on the Greek Gods and mythology was very original and captivated my imagination. I loved finding out more about the Underworld and how it worked. I also though the other gods and goddesses were well-developed characters, and all of them felt like real people.
The threat represented by the Thanatos adds to the excitement and pace of the story, and brings it to a perfect climax.

Persephone's Orchard  is a combination of intense emotions, rich descriptions and sweet romance. It's left me craving more, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
