Angry at the human race and its methodical destruction of her resources, Mother Earth recruits souls who have just left their bodies to serve Her, and turns them against humanity. A powerful, rising force proceeds to carry out Mother Nature’s plan to systematically destroy towns, cities, states… and eventually, the world. Amidst the chaos, a forbidden relationship between a human girl, Violette, and Onyx, a lead Gemini, begins. They will both find themselves in the middle of a revolutionary war that will either save, or destroy our world.

My Review

I was immediately drawn to the blurb for this story. It offers a rather unique paranormal concept, which captured my interest.

Geminis are beings created by Mother Earth, when they die as humans. They are Mother Earth's army, out to eradicate the human race that are destroying and poisoning the planet. They begin destroying a town by possessing humans and infiltrating the churches.
In a church/orphanage community, the priests are aware of the Geminis and their destruction, but regard them as demons and fight them as best as they can. Violette is a 16 year old orphan who lives at the orphanage, but she remembers life outside the restrictive community, before she was the lone survivor in mysterious fires that ravaged her neighborhood.
Onyx is a Gemini warrior, whose task is to infiltrate this church compound, but he doesn't expect the feelings aroused in him by the innocent Violette. Possessing the body of a young man in the compound, Slate, Onyx becomes closer to Violette, and has to make difficult decisions- Violette or his mission?

Violette is an interesting mix of contradictions, she's often seen as fragile but has an inner strength that shines through. She's very innocent, she's hardly left the orphanage since she arrived, but she's awakening as a woman and her feelings towards Onyx reflect this. I liked Violette, but I did sometimes want her strength to come through more often.
Onyx was also a very intriguing character. On one hand, he's a ruthless Gemini warrior whose mission is to kill all humans, and on the other he's set on protecting Violette. He's confused by the emotions Violette causes in him. Although he recognises her innocence, that has never stopped him from fulfilling his purpose before. Everything he feels for her conflicts with his purpose as a Gemini, and he has to struggle with this, and decide exactly what he has to do.
I'm looking forward to finding out more about the Geminis, and hopefully exploring their world more, in this series.

The relationship between Violette and Onyx starts in lust, mutual desire flares between the two, and this grows into deeper emotion, but I would have loved to have seen more romantic development. It was just unfolding at the end of the book, but left me with unanswered questions, that I want from book 2!

The beginning of the story was a little slow paced, but it intrigued me and introduced Geminis to us. Soon I was sucked in to the story, and was dying to read the last pages- always a good sign!
The ending left me needing more, and is set up perfectly for a sequel. I'm looking forward to reading more, and delving deeper into the world of the Geminis, and seeing how the relationship between Onyx and Violette will develop.

*I received a review copy from the author, for my honest review. Thank you!
