A Ranger's Tale by Mysti Parker; Review + Giveaway

A Ranger's Tale (Tallenmere #1)
Author: Mysti Parker
Publisher: Melange Books, LLC
Publish Date: 29 January 2011

In the fantasy world of Tallenmere, an elven noblewoman longed to leave her gilded cage. A half-breed former pirate wanted nothing more than to escape his guilty past. Easier said than done...

High elf Caliphany Aranea leads an enviable life as King Leopold's niece and daughter of Sirius, Leogard's most famous wizard. Yet, being forced to follow in her father's footsteps and being betrothed to a man she doesn't even like makes her want a taste of life outside the city walls.

As a young boy, half-elf Galadin Trudeaux witnessed his parents' death at the hands of pirates. After being raised by those same murderers and forced to do their bidding, he escaped and now lives an honest life as a sea merchant and ranger.

When two brutes at Leogard Harbor attempt to kidnap Caliphany while she dreams of faraway lands, Galadin comes to her rescue. Impressed by his skills, she asks him to train her as a ranger. Though he is hesitant at first to train a woman of her class, Caliphany's hefty sack of gold finally persuades him. Unfortunately, her father is not amused, and the two must escape before Caliphany faces a forced marriage and Galadin faces a noose.

From that moment on she and Galadin embark on an adventure of a lifetime. Only if they can survive the trials ahead, will they find a love that stands the test of time.

My Review

I enjoyed this fantasy romance a lot! It's set in the world of Tallenmere, where there's all sorts of creatures- fairies, mages, elves, halflings and humans. Mysti Parker does a wonderful job of building this magical world, but it's still so believable.

Caliphany is a high elf and niece of the King, her father is the arch-mage and Caliphany is expected to become a powerful mage and take over the mage academy. But this isn't the life that she wants for herself, she dreams of training as a ranger and exploring the world.
Opportunity presents itself when Galadin, a handsome half-elf and half-human ranger, rescues her from two thugs at the docks. Galadin agrees to train Caliphany whilst her father is gone from the city, and a forbidden attraction sparks betwen the two as they grow close together.

The chemistry between Galadin and Caliphany is strong, and despite the many obstacles between them they fall in love.
I loved Galadin, he's full of regret and guilt, but is at heart a good and kind man. Caliphany is a strong woman and chafes at the restrictions placed on her. She's very determined and knows what she wants from her life.

I loved that the story was written from 3 different perspectives, Caliphany's, Galadin's and Jayden's. It was great being able to see how they felt individually. Jayden comes to Caliphany's aid and gives her love when she needs it most, he's a very good man and I can't wait to read his story in Serenya's Song.

You'll be drawn into this magical world easily, and fall in love with Galadin, I promise!
